free.gif (14285 bytes)I enjoy finding good quality software on the Web, and on this page I will pass on to you the items that get my top rating - which means I have actually used them for a period of time, not just "reviewed" them. All credit to the authors, who have not only worked many hours to produce these programs, but have also chosen to give them away free. If you like one of these programs, then do drop the author an email to let him or her know. Often a programmer will get more of a buzz from an accolade than from a fee!

GO!ZILLA - Free automated download software. Very sophisticated, a few minor bugs, but a wonderful tool. Get it from  www.gozilla.com

IRFANVIEW - Probably the best and fastest graphics file viewer there is. And it is free for private use. Regular updates, and I love its speed. A dream for photographers. Plays video and audio files also. Get it from www.irfanview.com

INFRARECORDER- Create data CDs and DVDs on your PC. The program lets you burn audio CDs, burn and build ISO images, and create bootable CDs and DVDs. The program's design is similar to Windows Explorer: you drag and drop the files you want into a queue, then burn them. Works with Win 7, Win 8 , dual-layer discs, etc. Get it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/infrarecorder/

McAFEE SITEADVISOR - "We test the Web to help keep you safe from spyware, spam, viruses and online scams" A brilliant free application that checks out the safety of a web site as you connect to it. Get it whilst it is still free, from www.siteadvisor.com/

AUDACITY  - A top-notch audio editor with professional capabilities. Use it to burn CDs, edit and convert MP3 files and edit the audio tracks of  your videos, and much else. Get it from audacity.sourceforge.net

VLC MEDIA PLAYER  - Will play audio and video files that will not play in any other player - plays all those rare types, plus the usual ones. Get it from www.videolan.org

WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER - Microsoft's own free movie studio, a longstanding favourite. Get it from windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-live/movie-maker
